New Moon at Scorpio 8 degrees, Oct 30, 2016 at 10:38 am PDT
Halloween, the modern version of the cross quarter holy day of Samhain, is the end and the beginning of the Celtic Wheel of the Year. During this time the veil between the land of the living and the land of the dead is thin. It is the time of the year when the spirits of the ancestors come to visit and those departing our world of matter find it so much easier to cross over into the world of spirit. Many are crossing over now to help us from the other side. This New Moon at 8 degrees of Scorpio occurs on its eve. Mystery is the dominant theme. We humans always want to know the answers but there is so much we will never know or understand and we must accept that some things will always remain a mystery. One of the greatest mysteries is that of death, transformation and rebirth which lie at the heart of Scorpio.
Scorpio takes us deep into the mystery of ourselves, who we are without the filters of who we want to be. It can show us the deep wounds and battle scars we have sustained from living, this lifetime and others, and reminds us that no one gets out of here alive. If we can confront those wounded parts of ourselves honestly, it then allows for a deep and profound healing. The healing comes with feeling the wound, there is no way around it. For example, we have all had loss but if we don’t grieve those losses a wall can build up around our hearts in an attempt to not feel that grief. We can become hard-hearted. When we allow the feelings to rise to the surface, as painful as be they may, it allows us to keep our hearts open. As we heal those wounded places we must look honestly at ourselves, own our shadow and find a place of radical self-forgiveness as we release those parts of ourselves that no longer serve us.
This New Moon trines Neptune in Pisces which allows us to feel compassion for ourselves when we can practice self-forgiveness. Neptune in Pisces reminds us that we are all connected and allows us to feel the suffering of others when we have done the work of opening our hearts. We can then feel compassion for all our brothers and sisters who are having challenges in their lives, which includes most of us as well our non-human relatives. When we can remember that we are all related as children of Mother Earth we can hold each other in our hearts. Scorpio and Neptune are both water signs, so there is a transformation that takes place through the realm of feeling. We can be reborn as beings of love.
Mercury, God of the Mind, is involved in this New Moon. Mercury, the human mind, is amoral, it is neither good nor bad, it is only how we use it. In Scorpio it has a deep understanding of the psychology of people and its shadow can be very manipulative. In trine with Neptune, Mercury is prone to deception, sleight of hand and believing what we want to believe in its darker side. The gift of Mercury in this placement is that it can open our minds to higher realms and messages from the angels. The problem is that it is often hard to tell if we are in a state of illusion and delusion or speaking with the Divine. There is much misinformation and lies in our field as well as insightful guidance right now. It is important to be aware of this to be able to differentiate.
Another powerful energy in place now is Mars, the warrior, in a square to Uranus, God of Change and Awakening. This is very volatile energy and has the capacity to bring about revolution. There is so much anger and rage in the field right now and many cases it is righteous. It feels like a time when the people are saying “We have had enough!” It is about setting boundaries around what is acceptable and what is not. We have prayed for the perpetrator energy to come to the light where it can be healed. It is being shown in so many ways that it can no longer be denied, from the misogynistic comments of politicians to the fierce attacks on unarmed water protectors at Standing Rock to the continued police brutality, especially against people of color. When we can wake up realize our own power, that we can say “No!” to what is unacceptable and determine what is, we can change our world. It may not be easy as this energy has had a lot of power and will not give up easily but it is battle that must be fought.
Uranus is tightly aligned with Eris, a dwarf planet and in mythology, the feminine warrior and an agent of change. We see women standing up for themselves all over the earth right now, from women protesting in Poland for reproductive rights to women in South America protesting violence against women to the USA where women are protesting Donald Trump’s campaign offices for his misogynistic treatment of women. The USA will most likely have its first woman president as well. As Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox sing, “Sisters are doing it for themselves.” I say yes, it is time!
The Great Mystery is challenging us to trust our hearts, even if we cannot see what is ahead of us. The Sabian Symbol for this degree of the zodiac is, “The Silvery Moon Shining Across A Beautiful Gem Of A Lake.” In many spiritual traditions, the Moon is feminine, she is the Great Mother, loving and nurturing. As we become very still and quiet we can most easily access our inner guidance which is our connection to the Divine. We need Her guidance in these turbulent times of upheaval and change. We must go deeply within to the quiet inside to find the answers. The only way out is in.
There is a great transformation taking place now, like tectonic shifts deep within each of us and within Mother Earth. We are trying to align with the light which is the transmitter of the love of the cosmos. As we raise our vibration, the shadow and darkness that we have been carrying must leave for this to happen. These shifts in our reality can activate fear. We really don’t know what lies ahead of us for we are in a place of great uncertainty as the political, economic and social structures we have created are breaking down. I was told by a spiritual teacher that the Mayans say their calendar shows an unknown future . We are co-creating a new world moment by moment with the choices we make. What kind of world do we want? Do we really want to continue with the status quo that rules by fear? If not, we cannot let fear make our choices. Or we can choose love by understanding that in each moment we have choice to be kind, to be compassionate and to be grateful.
This New Moon sets the energy for the whole month and in this lunar cycle we have a very important election here in the USA. It takes courage to choose what we really want, to believe we can have it and to not buy into the fear that is all around us. The symbol for Scorpio is the Phoenix rising from the ashes. As we allow our hearts to open and to feel again, we can awaken and rise like the Phoenix from the ashes of fear, healed and transformed. We are leaving fear behind as we rise. Let us align with the light and together create a world based on love, compassion and beauty!
“Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.” Arundati Roy
